Did I get you with the title of this post? As many of you may know, I have switched over to Tide with my toddler when he turned about 15 months old because my previous cloth diaper safe detergents were not cutting it. The ammonia smell became so overwhelming and no matter how many different detergents I tried or how many times I stripped the diapers, nothing was helping! But with my new little one, I plan to use a cloth diaper safe detergent. In fact, I think that baby #2 is much more sensitive than baby #1, so we will see how things progress.
One of my favorite line of cloth diaper accessories is Balm Baby! I love their Essential Oils, Juice Those Wipes, and Diaper Balm. So I was excited when they came out with their own Liquid Cloth Diaper Safe Laundry Detergent. Below are my thoughts and opinions on this new detergent.
So I wasn’t lying when I said you are washing your cloth diapers in berries and nuts, but if I put the word “soap” in front of berries and nuts will you believe me? This BALM Baby Liquid Cloth Diaper Detergent is made from Soapberry (soapnuts) extract. The fruit pulp from soapberries is actually used to make soap. Soapberries are from the Sapindus family of deciduous and evergreen trees. Interesting right? So let’s take a look at what else is in this detergent!
- Taylor’s Soapberry extract soap
- Vegetable glycerin for softening
- Pure essential oils
- Organic and Natural, Made in Hawaii
- Cloth Diaper Safe and Sensitive Skin Friendly
- GMO Free
- 48/96 Loads (HE – 48, REG – 96)
- SLS (sodium laurel sulfate) and Phosphate Free
- High Concentration
- Perfume and Dye Free

Initially I was shocked at the tiny bottle that arrived in the mail. I am so used to the detergent boxes/bags being huge and bulky. I was pleasently surprised at the small size, and this makes it cheaper to ship! Bonus! I also love the packaging…it comes in a glass bottle made from amber. This bottle will provide you with 48-96 loads based on your washing machine. Now that is a lot of washing for such a small bottle. You only need a small amount; a little goes a long way. Even though the bottle was small, the smell was just perfect! My sample was lavender-grapefruit which had a nice flower/citrus scent. I am a big flavor of those 2 scents mixed together.
Initially I had doubts that a fruit/berry/nut could really wash my dirty cloth diapers, but I must say I was impressed. The fact that the formula is in liquid form also makes it super EASY! Some people are turned off when using soapberries because they have to put the whole berries/nuts in the laundry. In this liquid detergent, the berry has already been broken down. My cloth diapers came out smelling fresh and clean, no nasty poop or urine smells. I also noticed that there weren’t any stains either. The formula did a great job at getting my cloth diapers clean!
If you are looking for a unique cloth diaper safe liquid formula that works, this is the detergent for you. I must say that I am so impressed with BALM Baby’s customer service and willingness to help you troubleshoot any problems that you may have with any of their products! This is a huge plus in my book. Being able to easily access customer service can be a lifesaver. The owner is very active in her company and always willing to work with customers. All of the BALM Baby products are high quality and made here in the USA. Doesn’t get much better than that!
